We remember Rent\u2019s nightmare baby in Trainspotting<\/em>, the frantic motel escape in Drugstore Cowboy<\/em>, or the gruesome spirals of Requiem for a Dream<\/em>. Yet Debra Granik\u2019s debut feature Down to the Bone<\/em> offers a quieter, more lived-in portrayal that feels just as searing.<\/p>\n

A Grounded Portrait<\/strong>
Vera Farmiga plays Irene, an upstate New York supermarket cashier balancing family life and a growing cocaine habit. At first, her use barely ripples the surface – she snorts lines not to get high but simply to function. When her dealer refuses Grandma\u2019s birthday check (memo line: \u201cHappy Birthday, Jake\u201d), the personal cost becomes painfully clear.<\/p>\n
